China to Tighten Renewable Energy Waste Recycling Rules

China is accelerating regulatory frameworks for wind and solar equipment recycling, targeting a closed-loop waste system by 2030.

According to China Central Television, Beijing is moving faster to establish comprehensive regulations governing the recycling and reuse of wind turbine and solar panel equipment as renewable energy capacity expands nationwide. The policy push reflects growing concerns about the environmental footprint of the clean energy transition and the need to manage end-of-life equipment sustainably.

The government has set an ambitious target to establish a fully closed-loop waste management system for the renewable energy sector before 2030. This framework would create standardized processes for collecting, processing, and repurposing materials from decommissioned wind and solar installations, addressing a mounting supply chain challenge as early-generation renewable infrastructure reaches the end of its operational life.

The initiative underscores China's broader efforts to balance rapid renewable energy deployment with environmental responsibility. By establishing clear recycling mandates and reuse standards now, regulators aim to prevent waste accumulation while positioning domestic manufacturers to lead in circular economy practices for the clean energy industry.
