PJM to File Data Center Power Supply Backstop Plan

PJM Interconnection plans to submit a federal proposal this month addressing near-term capacity needs driven by data center demand.

The PJM Interconnection is moving forward with efforts to address mounting power supply pressures from data center growth. According to Utility Dive, the grid operator's board expects to file a comprehensive proposal with federal regulators this month, outlining a strategy to meet near-term capacity demands that have been strained by surging demand from hyperscale facilities.

The proposed backstop procurement plan represents a critical step in the region's energy infrastructure planning. PJM anticipates holding a competitive auction under the backstop mechanism as soon as September, providing an expedited pathway to bring additional generation resources online to serve the data center sector and broader grid reliability needs.

The initiative underscores ongoing challenges facing regional transmission operators as they balance rapid growth in computing infrastructure with traditional electricity demand. With data centers increasingly concentrated in the Mid-Atlantic region served by PJM, stakeholders view the backstop mechanism as essential infrastructure to ensure adequate reserves and prevent potential reliability gaps.
