Meta's new AI feature on Threads sparks privacy and user control concerns as the company expands AI integration across its platforms.

Meta is rolling out an AI assistant to its Threads social platform, allowing users to tag @meta.ai for real-time information about trending topics and breaking news. According to Fast Company, the feature is being tested in Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, with broader expansion planned. Threads leadership frames the tool as a way to help users quickly gather context before engaging in fast-moving conversations, a potential advantage for business professionals monitoring industry trends and market developments.

The rollout has generated significant pushback from users concerned about data privacy and limited control options. A community note flagged on Meta AI's debut post warns that the system has been rated as producing inaccurate information. Users have publicly questioned why they cannot block the account entirely, with Meta's response—that users can only mute or hide the feature—failing to satisfy critics who argue this amounts to a forced integration with no true opt-out mechanism.

Meta spokesperson Christine Pai told The Verge that the company plans to provide users with management options including muting the account, hiding replies, and marking posts as uninteresting. However, the inability to completely block Meta AI suggests the company views the feature as a core platform element rather than optional functionality. For Dallas-area businesses using Threads for marketing or community engagement, this raises questions about how AI-generated responses might appear alongside brand conversations.

Beyond Threads, Meta is expanding AI integration across its ecosystem with new Incognito Chat features in WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, offering encrypted conversations that automatically delete after sessions end. The company's aggressive push to embed AI throughout its platforms reflects a broader tech industry trend, though the Threads backlash indicates growing user resistance to mandatory AI features and concerns about maintaining control over personal data interactions.
