According to FreightWaves, Project Bay, a federal law enforcement operation, has exposed an illicit network operating within the trucking industry to move drugs across borders. The investigation resulted in the seizure of nearly 973 kilograms of suspected cocaine and 660 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $139 million. Authorities also recovered 17 firearms during the operation.
The multi-agency effort led to criminal charges against 21 individuals on a combined 104 offenses. The bust underscores the growing vulnerability of legitimate trucking and brokerage systems to exploitation by drug trafficking organizations, which have increasingly adopted practices resembling licensed freight brokers to evade detection.
The operation highlights ongoing law enforcement concerns about how transportation networks remain targets for organized crime. Federal agents have intensified scrutiny of cross-border freight movements as trafficking organizations seek to leverage the volume and complexity of commercial trucking to conceal contraband shipments.
